Admissions Essay

img00079Well, my application is underway...I have to write an essay that discusses, why I have chosen FIDM versus my other choices, what majors I am considering and why, how long I have considered this field and what my career goals are post graduation. Pretty thorough! I also got my information packet. I must say, I definitely know I'm applying to an art school just by the awesome attention to detail and graphic design of the course catalog!!! SO EXCITED!!!

Vogue - The Fashion Bible

kate-hudson-vogue-january-2008Ever since I was little I have been flipping through the pages of Vogue. It is a magazine that my mom always had by her side. Elle, Glamour, InStyle...They don't compare Vogue's timelessness. This magazine is known for being the Bible of the fashion industry. I always know that whenever I pick up an issue I'm going to hear about new upcoming designers and hot fashion trends. It's definitely a "must" for the person that wants to keep up on HIGH fashion versus popular consumer trends that magazine like InStyle and Lucky tend to write about. I haven't had a subscription to a fashion magazine in awhile just because in college I was a nomad, but now that I have seriously started pursuing the fashion industry, I need to subscribe! It definitely has been a muse in my life and will continue to be.

My New Brother - What Should I Name Him?

brother-sewing-machineAbout two months ago, I purchased my first sewing machine - a Brother ES2000! It is fabulous and idiot proof, for the most part. As long as you don't stick your hand under the needle you're A - Okay! The machine has an LCD screen that shows you your stitch length and stitch type (77 different stitch functions). With a click of a button, I'm pretty much set! I've actually started on my first project. I'll write about about it soon. Oh - and the best part is that it's white with green (my favorite color)! Now, the only thing my new Brother needs is a name...any suggestions?

I've Made A Decision

Well, I've decided on which school I'm applying to...logo_fidmFIDM!!! YAY!!! I'm starting my application process this week. Now it's just a matter of deciding which campus - San Francisco or Los Angeles. I suppose it's going to be based on where we can find jobs. I'm not going to focus on that right now though. It's time to get crackin' on my application. I need three references, I need to write two essays and complete an at home project! Man, I'm so excited and scared at the same time. It's the best feeling though!

Which School Should I Go To?

To get any where in the fashion world you either have to some sweet connections and get an apprenticeship or you need to have some type of formal training/education. I have my bachelor's degree from Arizona State University (GO DEVILS) in business and communications, but nothing that really qualifies me to do fashion marketing / PR / design. So, I've begun researching programs that will suit my life stage and give me credibility for the industry. This means that I'm either moving to NYC or California. There are some other options such as Savannah, GA or Providence, RI; however, I'd have to stay in school for three years. FIDM and Parsons offer two year degrees for those that have already achieved their bachelor's and are looking to make a career change (BINGO)! That's more of what I'm looking for. I also have to be able to work while I go to school to continue my professional career in PR and to afford to live in those states (haha).
