Summer Sales - Where to Shop

We just celebrated the 4th of July, and according to the fashion world summer is officially over now. Yep! It's over. Stores are putting all of their summer gear on sale, getting ready to bring in fall transitional items that will make you wish you were going back to school just so you can wear your new clothes for the first day.

By early September (just two months away), you'll start to see fall looks in full swing.

When you're sitting in 110 degree heat this seems absurd, but for the fashion lover like me I count down to this time of year. haha. It means MAJOR sale time, and a preview of the beautiful, autumn fashions to come.

First things first, where should you be shopping these major sales?

1. URBAN OUTFITTERS - They are having a crazy sale right now. I've never seen shoes SO cheap. This sale is happening in stores AND online. So, don't worry if you don't have a store close to you.

2. MADEWELL - This store along with J.Crew is my favorite of all time. It's just my style down to the T. So, of course, I'm super excited that ALL of their sale items are an ADDITIONAL 30% off when you use the code SALEAWAY. Right now they have some super adorable shoes on sale, as well as some sweaters and dresses that I've been eying for awhile.

3. ANTHROPOLOGIE - Ah yes, the store that has so many beautiful things at high prices...Well, now you can finally get your paws on the summer styles that you've been wanting without breaking the bank. Score colored denim, sequined skirts and silk blouses for under $100 with Anthro's summer sale. It's an additional 25% off the lowest price!!!

Go out shopping and stock up! Colored denim, button down shirts, exposed backs will all remain popular next year.

Americana

Happy 4th of July! I have some of the fondest memories celebrating America's Independence Day. Almost every year I have spent the 4th in New England - the most patriotic part of the U.S. In fact, did you know that Bristol, Rhode Island (where my mom's side of the family is from) has the oldest 4th of July parade in the history of the U.S.?

Every year we would wake up early to plant our lawn chairs on the side of the road to watch the parade go by. We would buy fresh lemonade from the food trucks and stuff our faces with clam cakes.

Then once it got dark, we would pack coolers with snacks and drinks and sit on the boat to watch fireworks blast across the ocean.

Maybe it's these fond memories of New England and the American spirit that has made me LOVE the preppy, all-American style.

I hope you have a fabulous 4th filled with family, friends and fireworks! Now, to start counting down the days until Halloween!!!

Baby Shower Peek

This past week has been a whirlwind of sweet time with dear friends and celebration of my baby girl that I'll get to meet in two months.

Of course, that means less blogging last week and this week. But once you see this sweet little video my dear friend Promise made of my baby shower that my talented sisters-in-law and bff's threw for me you'll see why it was easy for me to leave the virtual world for a moment.

More pictures to come, but I hope you enjoy this little peek into my world.

5 Tips When Working With A Stylist

Truth: Anyone can pick out clothes and put together an outfit. Everyone does it every day unless you live in a nudist colony.

  • Can everyone style a beautiful up-do for a wedding shoot? No.
  • Can everyone apply makeup for an editorial campaign? No.
  • Can everyone pick up a camera and snap magazine worthy photos? No.
  • Can everyone stand in front of a camera and look amazing? DEFINITELY no.

Being a self-employed stylist, I'm continually having to create demand and value for my profession and services. Styling is definitely seen as a luxury more so than hair or makeup artistry because of the simple fact that every person has personal style and dresses themselves daily. But if you decide that you want to bring a wardrobe expert to the table when doing a creative photo shoot, WHICH I HIGHLY recommend obviously, here are some tips:

1. Give them inspiration and a direction for the project, and then just let them run with it. Don't ask to go to the store with them. Don't ask to check their work. Think about if the wardrobe stylist said that to you? "Can I check your photos before you move onto the next look?" OUCH! There has to be mutual trust.

2. Model selection is KEY for a shoot. It's the face of your work. If you can, let the stylist have an opinion on who the subject is, especially if it's a pro-bono project. Clothes fit differently on different body shapes, so if the stylist has certain looks and/or a color palette  in mind it would be good to let him or her at least have an opinion on who you select.

3. At the minimum, give a stylist 2-3 weeks to get wardrobe together for a project. As much as I WISH I could waltz into a store and pull clothes, it just doesn't work that way. Stylists have to pitch the projects to store owners or sometimes corporate PR companies to get the thumbs up. Many times if the project is not guaranteed publication stores DO NOT let you pull. So, it takes a long time to find a clothing sponsor for a shoot. The more time the better.

4. Make sure the stylist is always on set when photos are being taken. Clothes move when the body moves, and sometimes they don't land in the most flattering spots. It's not only the stylist's job to pull wardrobe, but to make sure it's photo worthy at ALL times. That means steamed, pressed...picture perfect. If they put clamps on the back of an outfit - WORK WITH IT. At the end of the day, the stylist doesn't just need to make a great photo for their portfolio, they need to SELL the heck out of the clothes to the viewer. They are representing the clothing sponsor. That's the ONLY reason that the clothing company gave the stylist clothes in the first place. And if you don't use a stylist and you pull the clothes from a boutique yourself, PLEASE keep the store owner in mind!

5. Location, location, location. Make sure to tell your stylist your shooting location. For example, if you selected Sedona for an engagement shoot, I automatically think of red rocks. Therefore, I'm NOT going to have my client wear clothing that is mostly made up of orange, coral or red. It would look terrible. BUT, maybe you were thinking the woodsy Oak Creek and not the red rock, but it just happened to be in Sedona. Well, then those colors would look beautiful against the green leaves. Sadly, the stylist has already nixed those colors because all they know is Sedona.

More tips to come, but keep those in mind. Most importantly, just value a stylist's expertise and trust them completely. If they fail to meet your expectations work with someone else or maybe try wearing that hat too.

Baby Bumpin' Update

Well, well, my friends! I'm officially in the home stretch and have reached my third trimester. WOOOhooo! I can't wait to meet baby girl! Pregnancy has been a unique, eye-opening, beautiful, hard and exciting experience, and the grand finale is yet to come. Turning another year older last Friday, on top of all of these new experiences has blown my mind. One thing I know for sure is how much baby girl and I are loved by family and friends. I can't even fathom what it would be like to go through this experience without any love and support.

And on a FASHION note...Dressing stylish while pregnant is HAAARRRDD! Very hard! And if a fashion stylist is saying it's hard, then you know it has to be true. I would say half the battle is daily embracing the curves that are continuously growing. I'm not talking about the belly either...

And once you've gotten passed that, it's the underwear and bra situation that is pretty frustrating. Undergarments can completely change the shape of any woman's body and either enhance or detract from their outfit. Finding ones that don't make lines underneath my maxi dresses is a challenge. The seamless, no line underwear is the BEST solution I've found.

But it's all TOTALLY worth it. I'll be sharing a post about how to dress for maternity photos soon as I gear up for mine. Plus, I haven't even shared what kids fashion I'm loving these days! I'm shocked at myself! Stay tuned, and I hope you love these fun photos that my good friend Alejandra Vidal took at Promise Tangeman's GO LIVE workshop!
